I paint contemporary landscapes on silk. For many years I have been fascinated with the wonderful fiber silk. In 1982, while in Japan I became interested in the Kimono. I first began painting silk by using an ancient Japanese technique. Over the years my technique for painting silk has evolved. As an artist, I draw inspiration from nature, landscapes, atmospheres, the sun and the moon. I am fascinated by seeing a fragment of a larger world as when you look through a window. My technique is a combination of fabric dyeing with painting and collage. I use a resist technique including wax, as well as crayons and stenciling techniques. Some works include piecing and fusion as well as paper. Painting silk allows me to express the energy of color, and my fascination with the natural world.
My technique is an evolution of my experience working with silk. Over-dyeing or background dyeing involves dyeing silk in a vat with smooth stones. This creates a random mottled pattern. In painting, silk is stretched on a table and painted wet with textile pigment. In the resist process, colored and colorless crayons create barriers that pigment will not penetrate. Fusion - chosed areas of the silk are cut and combined with others by fusion or bonding. Each piece is sealed with an acrylic varnish for protection. My art is available framed.
